DVR…is it worth the extra $?

So just the other day I was thinking about how nice it would be to have DVR. Every Thursday I work 5-9, which means that my fiancé and I miss “Bones”. I don’t even know how many weeks we are behind!  We also miss “Raising Hope”. We can watch the episodes online, but sometimes the internet takes a while to load and it’s annoying to watch it on a small laptop screen. If we had DVR, then we could just hit a button and boom, our TV show is ready to watch. Right now we get the basic plus which is 77 channels. It costs $57.99 a month for that. The cheapest digital cable (Digital Gateway) costs $63.94 a month and then with the DVR that’s an extra $8.95 per month. So when you do the math, it would be $14.90 more per month than what we pay now. So I gotta think about this. That $14.90 per month could be saved and put towards the wedding. Our wedding is about 2 years away, so say we save that much for about…a year and a half, 18 months, that would be $268.20. So really, that’s not too terribly much, but it’s still something. And having the DVR will allow us to watch more of our shows. Which I guess you could say that watching more TV isn’t really necessary, but I think it would be really nice. So what do you think? Is the DVR a waste of our money or do you think it’s a luxury that we deserve? Leave me your comments and let me know what you think!

Oh, one more side not, I’m going to start couponing, so maybe the savings that we make at the grocery store will make up for the extra $14.90 a month we’d be paying for DVR, just a though.

  1. I say save your money. We thought about it as well, but if you are a busy person, you probably won't get around to watching all of the recorded episodes that same week anyway. Hulu is free and you only have to wait until the day after for most shows. I know $14 doesn't seem like much, but with that AND your coupon-ing you could save $30 or more a month.

  2. I would go with saving the money...About every 3 months I toy with the idea of getting a DVR, especially when I miss one of my favorite shows, but in the end saving the money wins.

I save a ton of money couponing, so it is definitely something to get into

  3. save your money, no one every accomplished anything watching television, if you miss a show its probably for the best anyway.

  4. I'm going to stand against the other comments - if you really want DVR, you should have it. Or, look into other options like Hulu Plus, where you pay $7 a month or something and can get network shows on demand without the added cable cost. I love TV and think it's an investment, especially if you use it for blogging. :)

  6. I think it could go either way. If you think it would be worth it to you to see your favorite shows I say go for it. I don't have DVR but I do resist my hubby who keeps trying to cut out our dish network. :)

  8. I think that ultimately you will feel better if you save the money. But DVR is fun. Maybe you should look at what all you could get for the wedding if you save it, and decide if those items are really necessary. Just my 2 cents.

    Good luck with your decision.

  9. Hi Nicole, I joined your bloghop today. http://linorstorecom.blogspot.com

About the DVR, I think with planning for the wedding, you'll have plenty to do. So, my vote is no, unless the coupon savings is enough.

  10. I cannot live without my DVR.. I am not kidding. I love it! I use it all the time! It comes in handy especially when you are watching tv and the kids need something. Just hit the pause button and resume when you come back!

  11. I loooooooove our DVR. My husband controls the TV while he is awake, so the only time I can watch my shows is late at night, DVR means I can watch them! Totally worth it in my opinion, and I am not a big TV watcher! I only watch a couple shows a week, but it is still worth it to me.

  12. Go for the DVR! I seriously have no idea how people live without them. We have not watched 'live' tv in years. No commercials, pause to go to the bathroom and watch whatever you want after the kids are in bed {sigh} With HD and a big screen, we don't even like going out to the movies -- it's so much nicer snuggling at home.
Let us know what you decide ~

  13. I'm a new follower via blog hop so, hello! :) We don't have DVR but sometimes I really wish we did. Our cable bill is so off the wall already that I am hesitant to add the extra charge!

  15. I agree with the last 3 comments! I love love love my DVR! It is so worth it to me. I pretty much set all my shows to record and then just watch them when I feel like it and that way I don't have to watch ANY commercials. If I do watch a show while it's airing and I need to get up for anything I just pause and play when I want because it automatically records whatever you are watching. Also, you can record 2 shows at once so if you want to watch two different shows that are on at the same time YOU CAN! I know I probably sound like an advertisement for DVR but I really do love it. You can totally save WAY more than the cost of the DVR if you start couponing anyway.
